Contact Lens Care

A short guide on how to insert, remove and care for your contact lenses.

Before inserting your contact lenses

  • Wash your hands.
  • Nails short and clean.
  • Use the tips of your finger to touch the contact lens. (Fig. 1)
  • Make sure the contact lens is not inside out. (Fig.2)

Always insert or remove contact lenses over a clean cloth or towel and you may find a mirror useful.

Inserting your contact lenses

  • Wash your hands.
  • Hold contact lens on the tip of your index finger. (Fig.3)
  • Place your other hand on your forehead fingers pointing downwards.
  • Use the middle finger to pull up the top lid.
  • Use the middle finger of the other hand to pull down the lower lid, look straight ahead and put the contact lens towards your eye.
  • Keeping your finger straight place the contact lens directly onto the coloured part of the eye.
  • Gently release the eyelid. If the contact lens is not central on the eye, close your eye and massage through the eyelid.

Taking your contact lenses out

Removal One

  • Wash your hands.
  • Make sure your contact lens is in place.
  • Restrain your eyelids in the same way as inserting the contact lens, with your index finger gently slide the contact lens to the outer corner of the eye. With your index finger and thumb gently squeeze the contact lens. This will release the contact lens from the eye. (Fig.4)
  • Clean and disinfect your contact lenses.

Removal Two

  • Wash your hands.
  • Place your fingers on eyelids over eyelashes.
  • Push your eyelids wide open and pull tightly sideways. (Fig.S)
  • Then force a blink, hold other hand below the eye to catch your contact lens. (Fig.6)

Caring for your contact lenses

Cleaning Using Multi Purpose Contact Lens Solution

  • Wash your hands.
  • Place the contact lens in the palm of your hand.
  • Apply a few drops of multipurpose contact lens solution.
  • Using your little finger gently rock and rotate the contact lens in the contact lens solution. (Fig.7)
  • Rinse with the contact lens solution and gently transfer to the correct part of your storage case.

Caring For Your Contact Lenses

  • Look after your contact lenses and the case.
  • Only use care products supplied by your optician.
  • Never use tap water, saliva, mineral or home made salt water, this may cause infection.
  • Clean your contact lens case regularly and replace it frequently
  • Take care when using cosmetics and hairspray.
  • Do not use any in-eye medication without consulting your opticians.
